Perfect Perforations: Classic Rendezvous

History

In the late 1960s and the 1970s customizing bicycle components as a means to reduce weight was quite common. Holes were drilled into chainrings, brake levers and derailleurs and a decorative pattern was often used. It was thought that every ounce that could be removed from the bike would enhance one’s performance (in reality, any increased efficiency is insignificant). I started Perfect Perforations in 1974, making use of my background in machining and bicycle repair to drill and buff components.

Today

Drilled parts, which later came to be known as “drillium,” went out of style after a few years, but recently there has been a resurgence of interest in classic bicycles, and along with that, an interest in customization. In 2010 I restarted my company, offering the traditional services that I had in the past; but knowing that there are no real performance advantages, I approached it from a strictly decorative point of view. And so, I looked into other things that could be done, and as a result, inlay, engraving, milling, and etching are also available. In addition, I find myself doing a good bit or restoration to components that have been damaged – either through accidents or corrosion.
